US-based bioscience social enterprise Green Dot has developed a bioplastic which is a better alternative to the petroleum based elastomeric packaging materials, which will be showcased on 28-31 October at Pack Expo 2012 in Chicago.

Green Dot's packaging material is the market's first compostable elastomeric bioplastic made from renewable plant based ingredients, free from phthalates and bisphenol A.

It's puncture resistant and pliable nature will gently biodegrade and return to nature when placed in composting environment once its useful life has ended.

The bioplastic, which has been verified to meet US (ASTM D6400) and EU (EN 13432) standards for industrial composting, is biodegradable in a home composting environment as well.

It is suitable for the majority of plastics processing applications, and can be used on existing machinery for injection molding, blow molding, profile extrusion, extruded sheet, films, foams and laminates.

Unlike conventional elastomers, it offers cradle-to-cradle environmental integrity which was unavailable earlier.

The company aspires to improve the environment by building a more sustainable world through renewable bio-based resins and promoting their use through invention, creation and research.

Green Dot is a privately held company headquartered in Cottonwood Falls, Kansas. It manufactures compostable bio-resins and recycled consumer goods.
